Cross-Country Skiing in Wengen

Cross-country skiing is not possible in the village of Wengen itself, but just a 10-minute train ride down the mountain brings you to Lauterbrunnen, where a scenic loop awaits. This makes Wengen a convenient and peaceful base for cross-country skiing in one of the most dramatic valleys in the Alps.

Cross-Country Skiing Access from Wengen

The main cross-country ski trail starts in Lauterbrunnen, near the sports center and train station, and stretches approximately 12 km along the flat valley floor. The trail is suitable for both classic and skating styles and is ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers. Along the route, you pass frozen waterfalls, snowy meadows, and views of the surrounding cliffs and peaks.

Getting there from Wengen is simple. The cogwheel train runs regularly and takes about 15 minutes to reach the trailhead, making it easy for Faern guests to enjoy a Nordic skiing experience without staying in the valley.

Broader Nordic Options in the Region

While Wengen itself has no prepared trails, the Jungfrau Region offers a few additional cross-country possibilities depending on snow conditions. Mürren may have short trails during good snow periods, and day trips to the Goms Valley or Haslital offer larger networks for more experienced Nordic skiers.

Cross-Country Ski Rental in Wengen and Lauterbrunnen

Rental options for cross-country ski equipment are available in both Lauterbrunnen and Wengen:

  • Alpia Sport Lauterbrunnen – Offers classic and skating ski sets, conveniently located near the trail
  • Central Sport Wengen – May provide Nordic gear upon request; recommended to reserve in advance

Most shops offer boots, poles, and skis as full packages. For the best availability, guests are advised to book equipment online or contact the shop before arrival.

Practical Info

The Lauterbrunnen trail is usually open from mid-December to early March, depending on snowfall. Trail maintenance is frequent, and access requires a small day pass, available at the sports center or via Loipen Schweiz. Lessons are limited in the area, so prior experience or beginner instruction beforehand is helpful.

Stay with Faern

Faern Victoria Lauberhorn is ideally located near the Wengen train station, offering seamless access to Lauterbrunnen’s cross-country trail. After a day of skiing, guests can return to Wengen and unwind in the hotel’s spa or enjoy the quiet alpine atmosphere high above the valley.
