Freeriding in Wengen

Freeriding in Wengen
Freeriding refers to off-piste skiing or snowboarding in natural, unprepared snow, often far from the groomed slopes. It demands technical skill, avalanche awareness, and local terrain knowledge, but rewards riders with untracked descents and immersive alpine experiences. The Swiss Alps offer some of Europe’s best freeriding, with varied terrain, reliable snowfall, and a strong safety culture.
Freeriding in Wengen
Wengen is not a traditional freeride destination, but it offers several accessible off-piste options for confident skiers and snowboarders. The area around Lauberhorn and Tschuggen provides terrain with moderate gradients and good visibility, often holding fresh snow after storms. Runs from the north side of Männlichen and off the backside of the Wengernalp area can also be explored in suitable conditions.
These routes are not marked or patrolled and require avalanche safety gear and terrain assessment. Many of the best lines are hidden in gullies, forested slopes, or bowls that are visible from lifts but only accessible via short traverses or hikes. Riders are advised to hire a local guide to discover safe and legal zones, especially given the protected landscapes and wildlife habitats in the Jungfrau region.
Regional Freeride Opportunities
Stronger freeriders based in Wengen often explore neighboring sectors of the Jungfrau region. Mürren-Schilthorn offers steeper couloirs and powder bowls, including famous descents like the Engetal or the upper Blumental area. Access is possible via train and cable car from Lauterbrunnen.
Grindelwald’s backside terrain, particularly from the Eiger Glacier and Oberjoch, also presents freeride options for advanced skiers. These areas offer higher elevation and more consistent snowpack, with several routes requiring glacier or crevasse awareness.
