Sledging—also called tobogganing—is one of the most accessible and joyful winter activities in the Alps. Unlike skiing, it requires no special technique or equipment beyond a sturdy sledge and warm clothing. Sledging appeals to families, non-skiers, and thrill-seekers alike, with routes ranging from gentle descents to high-speed runs. Wengen is an excellent base for sledging, offering dedicated tracks, safe access, and stunning scenery.

Sledging in Wengen

Wengen features several sledging routes suited for different age groups and adventure levels. One of the most popular options is the run from Wengernalp down to Wengen, offering around 4 km of descent through forested paths and open meadows. The slope has a moderate gradient, making it manageable for families while still exciting for adults.

A shorter but steeper option begins at the Allmend station and follows the winter hiking path back into the village. Both runs are easily accessible via the cogwheel train and can be repeated multiple times in a day. Trails are groomed regularly and separated from ski slopes for safety.

Sledging in Wengen is especially enjoyable during late afternoons, when golden light and mountain views add to the atmosphere. While there are no night-sledging runs within Wengen itself, occasional evening sledging events are organized during high season.

Regional Sledging Routes

Beyond Wengen, the wider Jungfrau region offers extended sledging experiences. The most notable is the Fox Run(Fuchsbach), starting from Kleine Scheidegg and descending 4.5 km toward Wengen. It’s a fast, twisting trail suitable for confident riders, and can be reached via the train from Wengen. Another option is the Männlichen to Holenstein run, accessible by gondola, which offers a long, scenic ride with panoramic views of the Eiger and Lauterbrunnen Valley.

These regional trails are clearly marked and often included on the Jungfrau sledging map, available locally and online.
